So when do you unlock the Torrent mount? This Elden Ring guide will tell you. All things considered, unlocking the ability to summon the mount is pretty easy, as any core mechanic should be, and we’ll discuss it and a little more about your horse below.

Where to Find the Torrent Mount in Elden Ring

You’ll unlock the ability to summon Torrent once you meet Melina in the early game, either on the way to Stormveil Castle or in Agheel Lake North, the latter of which is the best way to go first. Check out our guide to leveling up and increasing your stats for more on that.

During the conversation you have with her, Melina will give you the Spectral Steed Whistle, a piece of equipment that summons Torrent wherever you are, automatically spawning them under you. There are, however, some exceptions to keep in mind for the mount.

Note you cannot ride Torrent in dungeons or during a multiplayer session. Multiplayer, in this case, includes both cooperative play or while being invaded by another player. Torrent will automatically despawn in either case. There are also certain times when the mount becomes unavailable when you can summon NPCs or when they invade.

Torrent is likewise unavailable during boss fights, though there are specific exceptions you’ll discover as you play. If you try to summon Torrent somewhere the horse is not available, your character will still make an attempt, scratch their backside, then return to a neutral state.

Don’t try to use the Whistle at a bad time. There’s no way to stop the usage failed animation, leaving you vulnerable to attack for about three seconds. It’s best to equip the horse Whistle to your quick action menu in the start menu screen. Don’t bind it to your consumable section in the Equipment menu, as cluttering will cost you at least a few deaths.

You can also pillage and acquire materials while riding Torrent, and you can also summon spirits while on the mount. Finally, you can also fast travel while riding your trusty steed, though you will automatically dismount when you arrive at your destination.
